In 1965 his link was to Hull’s legendary folk musicians, the Watersons and guitarist Martin Carthy. who taught him the intricate finger-picking techniques and traditional English melodies that heavily inspired Simon & Garfunkel's famous arrangement of "Scarborough Fair"
In September 1965 the virtually unknown Paul Simon performed a gig in Hull at The Watersons’ Folk Union One Club located above Ye Olde Blue Bell pub on Market Place. His time touring northern venues like Hull and nearby Widnes provided the inspiration for his hit song "Homeward Bound"
